An aching heart can only be cured with food in Gabriel's mind, quick feet often outpaced his clumsy one's. So more often than not his mouth remained empty and panting, however, the work was well worth the effort when he did catch a large hare almost enough for two smaller wolves. But Gabriel's hulking frame thought it a perfect meal for one. He quickly wolfed down his meal and began on his path back to the camp. The forest looked peaceful, but he knew better, his ears caught the minute sounds of mice beneath his feet digging new tunnels and a woodpecker intently focused on a grub. A small stream crossed his path and although not frozen it certainly felt like it going down his throat. The feeling was unpleasant and he decided not to let a paw touch the icy water. His eyes wandered over his surroundings, almost yearning for something to happen, someone to fight. He hadn't had a good fight for over a week and it was getting to him. He had done his job training a runt from a litter the year before, it was an amazing thing to see the runt grow up like that and then he turns around and wants to fight for the rank of Zeta. The pup was easily beaten but the dishonor had been done, every time he came into the presence of Gabriel his eyes turned down in shame and Gabriel would need to dominate if they didn't. Thankfully they did and they lived in the same pack in peace, but it was awkward for them both.
The pale yellow of his eyes matched some of the dying leaves still stuck on the trees that had long since asked them to leave, like annoying tenants or young adults still living with their parents. Gabriel smiled slightly at his own thoughts and continued the rather long walk pack to his den. His plan was to sleep off the rest of the afternoon and be ready for whatever came at night. His eyes started to look wistful at the beautiful sky, remembering better times and better places, although confined to the island his thoughts often reached outside of it wondering what might be over the deep blue ocean. His imagination began to run rampant, but with a firm paw Gabriel put a stop to it. HE needed to think about the here and now rather than what might be.
His tracks were deep in the mud of the melting snow, it wasn't being a very harsh winter but it was definitely winter. His coat bristled as a nipping wind blew over him, it only grew stronger and he tucked his tail to keep it warm. His fur almost didn't keep him for warm from the bite, and his eyes watered a bit before the wind stopped. When it did he breathed a sigh of relief, he could fight anything but the weather.
